ReplyDeleteIn the novels Candide by Voltaire and Chronicles of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Marquez fate is portrayed as being predetermined and often times affected by the traditions of culture and society as a whole.

Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez both express the cultural norm of elders having authority over younger people within a society.

ReplyDeleteBecause the older generations were raised in very traditional, controlling societies, the common theme in the books Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Marquez focuses on the rigid restraints they put on the main characters Kikuji and Santiago.

Chronicles of Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marqueez and Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata, demonstrated how one person's mistake affects not only themselves but creates an unbalanced society.

ReplyDeleteIn both Voltaire by Candide, and Chronicles of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the authors, while using completely unalike writing styles, are able to convey similar themes regarding fate, and the idea that we have little control over many events in our lives.
ReplyDeleteIn the books, Thousand Cranes by Yasunari Kawabata and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mrs. Ota, Chikako, and Angela have made the protagonists feel victimized through their own malicious motives and intend to make any situation work for their benefit and not for that of the protagonists.

ReplyDeleteThe use of imagery in the novels Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Candide by Voltaire allowed me, as a western reader, to connect with the characters' experiences despite my lack of understanding about their culture.
